Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting gives a room a clean, built-in look without the visual clutter of hanging fixtures. Whether you’re replacing dated fixtures or adding light to a room that needs it, here’s how we approach it.

Some canless fixtures double as a night light. Drag to compare.

Can vs. canless: what’s actually different

Canned recessed light

Can (traditional) recessed lighting uses a metal housing installed into the ceiling, then a trim, then the bulb. It’s the easier option to install before drywall goes up, which is why you’ll see it most in new construction.

Canless recessed light

Canless recessed lighting skips the metal housing. Housing, trim, and light source are one self-contained LED unit mounted straight into the ceiling. No bulbs to change later, and most let you switch the color temperature from warm to cool with a flip of a switch. This is what most retrofits use, since it doesn’t require the same ceiling access as a can.

Either way, trim style matters for the look you want: a baffle trim reads closer to traditional recessed lighting, a flat trim reads more modern. For the full breakdown with photos, see our Can vs. Canless Recessed Lighting guide.
